MIT is turned on by Open Source values and notes, as I do in my manifesto, that they are spreading out of software and into other areas of business.
The article is based on an interview with Eric von Hippel, professor at MIT's Sloan School of Management who has written a book called, "Democratizing Innovation".
"Manufacturers should redesign their processes to systematically seek out user ideas and innovations."
Bob Garfield's Chaos Scenario article in AdAge is getting a lot of attention. Presumably he is being intentionally provocative as he is suggesting that the end of TV advertising is going to lead to the demise of the US economy. Which is clearly not true. It succumbs to the view that consumers are unable to find their way out of bed in the morning without the promise of some carefully crafted marketing messages to guide them on their way. "Industry changed by technology", is hardly a new story.
VW's broadband loving Project Fox is a great example of Open Source Marketing : create the environment, provide the tools and help the community build around your brand and product. In this case online and offline. Excellent stuff. (Via Jon Froda at e-mediate).
Rupert Murdoch spoke to the American Society of Newspapers Editors about the Internet yesterday and acknowledged his status as a "digital immigrant". It's an insightful speech that borrows this great quote from the uber-commentator Jeff Jarvis (who writes it up here).
"Give the people control of media, they will use
it. Don’t give people control of media, and you will lose
them."
Murdoch also says that the technology isn't the issue...
"What I worry about much more is our ability to make the necessary
cultural changes to meet the new demands of the digital native."
An essential read for any modern PR professional. We tackle these cultural issues in Open Sauce Live.
Downhill Battle is a community of musicians who are using Open Source techniques and tools to fight the music monopoly created by the big 5 labels. It's a great example of an organised grassroots group creating their own community using different free technologies. Downhill Battle have mixed Blogs and Bittorrent to create BlogTorrent : a channel that allows independent producers to narrowcast video at a low cost. Clever stuff.
The BBC reports here how US politicians are using podcasts to, "beam their message to their supporters without having to go through the traditional media."
We discussed the issues raised in the manifesto I prepared - What is Open Source Marketing? - and how we use them within our workshop sessions Open Sauce Live. It's a big subject and it was difficult to squeeze it into half an hour but we covered off a fair amount. Many thanks to Shel and Neville.
It was the first time I had ever used Skype which was an eye-opener. Click here to go to the interview page.
Collaborate Marketing is so called because the new user-friendly web is allowing people to come together in ways and numbers never seen before. And people seem to really enjoy it. And the latest draft chapter of Shel and Scoble's Red Couch book confirms why...
"It seems it is human nature to collaborate and at least one research experiment would indicate it’s because collaboration turns us on."
