Dell recently launched IdeaStorm, a site designed to collect ideas and views from the public. And when
135,000 people all suggested that pre-installed Linux or OpenOffice machines would be a good thing, Dell initially said they would oblige, thrilling open source fans everywhere. However, once the firm looked into it, they realised it wasn't a viable option - and had to ignore all of the requests. As Bojo points out, listening really is the easy bit. (Via Memex).

Hello, this is one of those funny marketing stories we see every now and then. For me the fact that Dell finally decided to take a good look into their consumers to listen and learn from the, is a great deal.
But as you say, listening is the easy bit, going beyond is not. I just don't know if what they say is "not viable" is actually not viable. Hell, they have 135,000 people saying they would buy from them if they made it a viable option. There's gotta be a way, Dell!

Thanks Ron, I agree it's just good that Dell are trying something different. But you would have thought they could work something out to meet the demands of so many - and make a profit along the way!
