Back in 2000, myself, Dug and several other excellent individuals, spent a year planning a huuuuge MMORPG for the owners of the original James Bond IP. Part of the process was working out the cost of building a system that could support 100k+ simultaneous, 007 wannabees. As you'd imagine, the spreadsheet was something to behold. I was reminded of this when reading Fred Wilson's take on the difference in economics between Web 1.0 and 2.0 start-ups. It's well worth a read if you are of a commercial bent. Six years ago, our plan was to build, from scratch, various large component parts that would merge to create an online spy world. Looking back, it was a vast social networking system. If we were to create such a beast today the economics would be entirely different as we wouldn't have to build everything. We'd *just* wrap up...
